Tenvir EM

Tenvir-EM is a fixed-dose combination medication used for the treatment and prevention of HIV-1 infection. It contains two active ingredients:

1. Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate (TDF): 300 mg
2. Emtricitabine (FTC): 200 mg

Both are Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NRTIs) that work together to prevent the replication of the HIV virus.

Indications:

1. Treatment of HIV-1 Infection:
   • Used in combination with other antiretroviral medications as part of a complete regimen to manage HIV-1.
2. Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP):
   • Tenvir-EM is used for PrEP, a preventive strategy to reduce the risk of acquiring HIV-1 infection in individuals at high risk.

How Tenvir EM Works:

• Both TDF and FTC inhibit the action of the reverse transcriptase enzyme, a key enzyme that HIV uses to replicate its genetic material.
• By blocking this enzyme, the medication helps suppress the virus and reduce its presence in the body.

Dosage and Administration:

1. HIV Treatment:
   • One tablet daily as part of a combination therapy, with or without food.
2. PrEP:
   • One tablet daily, starting at least 7 days before exposure risk and continuing during the period of potential exposure.

2. Bone Density Loss:
   • Decreased bone mineral density, increasing the risk of fractures.
3. Lactic Acidosis:
   • A rare but serious condition involving the buildup of lactic acid in the blood.
4. Hepatitis B Exacerbation:
   • Stopping Tenvir-EM suddenly in individuals with hepatitis B co-infection can lead to severe flare-ups.

Precautions:

1. HIV Testing Before PrEP:
   • Confirm that the individual is HIV-negative before starting Tenvir-EM for PrEP, as it is not sufficient for treating established HIV infection.
2. Kidney and Liver Function:
   • Periodic monitoring of kidney and liver function is recommended.
3. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:
   • Can be used during pregnancy with medical advice. Consult your doctor before use while breastfeeding.
4. Drug Interactions:
   • Inform your doctor about any other medications or supplements, as Tenvir-EM may interact with some drugs.

Who Should Use Tenvir-EM?

• HIV-1 Patients:
  • Individuals who need a combination antiretroviral therapy as part of their HIV treatment.
• High-Risk Individuals for PrEP:
  • Those at risk of HIV exposure, such as through sexual contact or injection drug use.
